Today I want to talk about a mistake that I have seen in a couple clients of mine, especially before I have worked with them. That mistake is that they are sitting in front of me and they desperately want to know what it is that they are good at, like what value they bring or which job they should start searching out, or what kind of business they could start.
And when I present the opportunity to work with them their response is, "Well, I don't really need that because I already know what I'm good at." And I'm thinking in my head, "If you knew what you were really good at, you would not be in this position." They're just so off the mark. But they also are seeing incorrectly that they think they know what they're good at, and they don't and that's why they're struggling.
So, if you are building a business, and you can't answer the question in a really succinct way of what you're good at, that's a problem. You might be building a business around something that you think you're good at, someone in your life, someone who maybe was actually a trusted person or is a trusted person in your life and they said, "You're really good at this." But you're actually not, you've just maybe picked up a few skills along the way that you became really good at. And that's great. You can apply them in the future, but that doesn't mean that that's what you should be building your business around.
So in order to avoid building the wrong business, and to avoid building the wrong team for your business, you need to know officially what it is you're good at. And a lot of times we're the worst people to actually know what it is we're good at. That's where coaches come into play and this is like my job. This is one of those things where I was building a business. I was going to have a lingerie business and I literally had customers. I know how to make bras that fit perfectly for women and I'm really good at it. I had people who were really excited, because it's a pretty unique thing to know someone who knows how to make bras and lingerie and they were really excited with that. I got a lot of really great encouragement from it. I've sewn since I was a little kid. I know how to do it. I have all of the books, I have all of the things. And the thing is, that is not what I'm good at. I can totally do it. I am trained. I'm actually a Certified Professional bra maker. I literally am trained and I spent a lot of money learning how to do it. But I'm not good at that.
Instead, what I'm really good at doing is helping people see what it is that they are good at, and I've been doing it all of my life. I just didn't realize that I had been doing it all of my life already. It wasn't until I had a coach walk me through my strengths. It was life changing. And for the first time in my life, I was like, "Oh, I'm actually good at something." I don't even struggle when I'm doing the things that I'm good at. And realizing that the things that I'm good at, I could actually build a business around.
Now I'm building a team where my team complements my strengths. So their strengths are my weaknesses. And my strengths are their weaknesses, and it's awesome. So when you get off your high horse of thinking, "Hey, I already know what I'm good at," then you can sit down and figure it out. It's hard, right? It's super hard to be like, "Okay, let me sit and figure out what it is that I bring to the table." And it's easier just to go do something then actually become self aware. No one wants to do that. But if you actually do that deep work... and this doesn't have to be for years, it can just be like in a matter of hours, so all of a sudden, you get some aha moments, and you're like, "Oh my goodness, okay. This is why I've been struggling so hard in my business. Now I'm going to pause, I'm going to reconfigure how I can change that or hire out for that part, and get into alignment with what it is I love doing."
So I just want to encourage you, if you are an online entrepreneur, and you're sitting at your desk, and you have all of the to dos and you have overwhelm, you have so many ideas, you have no idea how to organize them all, you have monkey brain, you are taking forever doing certain parts of your business, you might just not be working in your strength. And you might be thinking, "Oh, this is what I have to do. I need to struggle, I need to do all these things." And in fact, it's just the way that you're wired. And so when you know like okay, "This is how I'm wired," you can reconfigure what you have to do, because if you have an online business, guess what, you're going to have to have a website. That is true.
I spent like six months figuring out how to build a website. I signed up for a course. I got a website, it was great, but I really had to work really, really hard to figure that out. I'd rather talk to people all day long than figure out the backend of a website.
This is why I like the strength test so much. It literally tells you what you're good at. It's not that you're a failure. It's not that you have things to work on. Instead, it's more of how can you incorporate more of what you already are doing. You're already doing it in your life and move that forward and use it in your business and then build a business around it. You do that by taking the time to take an assessment and work with a coach.
I took the Strengths Assessment 10 years ago for the first time. I didn't have a job. I'd lost it because of the financial crisis and my sister paid for me to take it. And I got the results in and I was like, "I don't know what any of this means." And yes, I can read the words on the page, but it didn't help me. And literally, it wasn't until 10 years later, when I had a coach who walked me through the strengths that I had all of the light bulb moments of "I am good at something," "Oh my goodness, I can totally build a business around my strengths and I'm going to do it. And it was totally life changing.

I just want you to know too, that it isn't that you don't know what you're good at, but what we are good at comes so easily that it is incredibly easy to miss the fact that what we're good at is our superpower. Like we do it so naturally that we don't ever think about saying *that* is our superpower. And so when you take the time to get verbiage around it, it can be game changing.
